Co-managed IT: support for your in-house IT team, not a replacement
Many UAE organisations have one IT manager or a small team carrying everything. Co-managed IT gives them enterprise tools, specialist skills and cover, while they keep ownership.
The short answer
Co-managed IT means your in-house IT staff keep ownership of your systems while a managed services provider adds monitoring, patching, security, backup, specialist skills and extra capacity. Responsibilities are written down in a split, so nothing falls between the two. It suits organisations that already employ IT staff but need depth, cover or tools they cannot justify alone.

Why co-managed IT exists
A single IT manager is expected to be the helpdesk, the network engineer, the security lead, the backup administrator and the project manager. When they are on leave, ill or busy with a migration, everything else waits. Hiring a second and third specialist rarely makes sense for a small or mid-sized business.
Co-managed IT closes that gap. Your team keeps the knowledge of your business and its people. The provider brings the platforms and the depth.
A typical split of responsibilities
Your in-house team usually keeps
- Business applications, ERP and line-of-business systems.
- Day-to-day contact with staff and management.
- Priorities, budget and vendor decisions.
The provider usually takes
- Monitoring, patching and remote management through enterprise RMM — see monitoring and RMM.
- Endpoint, email and identity security — see managed cybersecurity.
- Backup monitoring and tested restores — see managed backup and DR.
- Microsoft 365 administration and licensing — see managed Microsoft 365.
- Service-desk overflow, leave cover and project capacity.
The split is a starting point. What matters is that it is written down, with shared access to the same ticketing and documentation, so nobody has to guess who owns an issue.
Co-managed or fully outsourced?
Choose co-managed when you have capable IT staff and want to keep that knowledge in-house. Choose fully managed when you have no IT staff, or when your IT person is really an office manager covering IT on the side. Some organisations start co-managed and move to fully managed as they grow, or the other way round. Our MSP vs in-house IT guide compares the options.
What to agree before you start
- A written responsibility split, reviewed each quarter.
- Shared access to tickets, documentation and monitoring dashboards.
- First-response targets by priority for the work the provider owns.
- Escalation: who calls whom during an outage.
- Admin access rules — both sides should use named accounts, not a shared one.

Common questions
Questions UAE businesses ask.
What is co-managed IT?
Co-managed IT is an arrangement where your in-house IT person or team keeps day-to-day ownership, and a managed services provider supplies tools, specialist skills and extra capacity alongside them. Responsibilities are split in writing, so both sides know who does what.
Who is co-managed IT for?
Organisations that already employ IT staff but need help with monitoring, security, after-hours cover, projects or holiday cover. It is common when one IT manager is responsible for everything and has no backup.
Will co-managed IT replace our IT staff?
No. The point is to make your team more effective, not to replace it. The provider takes on the repetitive and specialist work, so your staff can focus on the business systems and people they know best.
How is co-managed IT priced?
Usually per user or per device for the shared tools and monitoring, plus the services you choose to hand over, such as security, backup or service-desk overflow. Missan 365 scopes it to your team and quotes in writing.
