MSP vs in-house IT: an honest comparison for UAE SMEs
Hire an IT person, outsource to a managed services provider, or do both? Here is how the options compare on cost, cover, skills and risk.
The short answer
For most UAE SMEs, a managed services provider gives broader skills, continuous monitoring and cover that one in-house hire cannot, for a predictable monthly fee. In-house IT wins on local knowledge and being on site every day. Many organisations with an IT employee get the best of both through co-managed IT.

The comparison, point by point
Cost
An in-house hire is a salary plus visa, medical insurance, training, tools and the cost of cover when they are away. An MSP fee is per user or per device, with the tools included. Compare the full cost of both, not the salary against the fee. Our pricing models guide shows how MSP fees are built.
Cover
One person means one point of failure: leave, illness and resignation all leave you exposed. An MSP has a team behind the service desk, plus continuous monitoring of critical systems.
Skills
Networking, Microsoft 365, security, backup and cloud are separate specialisms. A generalist cannot be expert in all of them. An MSP has specialists in each.
Tools
Enterprise monitoring, patching, security and service-management platforms are hard to justify for one organisation. An MSP brings them as part of the fee — see our technology stack.
Local knowledge
This is where in-house IT wins. Your own person knows your people, your quirks and your history. A good MSP narrows the gap with documentation, named engineers and onsite visits, but it is a real advantage.
Accountability
An MSP works to a service agreement with first-response targets and monthly reporting. In-house performance is measured however your management chooses to measure it.
Which fits your organisation?
- No IT staff: fully managed IT is usually the right fit.
- One IT person carrying everything: co-managed IT gives them tools and cover — see co-managed IT.
- An established IT team: use an MSP for specialist areas such as security, backup or Microsoft 365, or for projects.
Questions to ask yourself
- What happens to our IT when our IT person is on leave?
- Who checks our backups actually restore?
- Who is watching our systems out of hours?
- Is our documentation written down, or in one person's head?

Common questions
Questions UAE businesses ask.
Is an MSP cheaper than hiring an IT person?
It depends on what you compare. One IT employee costs a salary plus visa, insurance, training, tools and leave cover — and still cannot be an expert in every area. An MSP spreads tools and specialists across many clients. For most small and mid-sized organisations, managed IT gives broader cover for a predictable fee; larger organisations often combine both.
When does in-house IT make more sense?
When you run complex, business-specific systems that need someone on site every day, or when IT is central to what you sell. Even then, many organisations add an MSP for monitoring, security and cover — known as co-managed IT.
What happens to our existing IT employee if we hire an MSP?
They do not have to go. Many organisations move their IT person into a role focused on business systems and users, and let the MSP handle monitoring, patching, security and backup. That is co-managed IT.
How quickly does an MSP respond compared with an in-house person?
An in-house person is fast when they are at their desk and available. An MSP works to written first-response targets by priority. At Missan 365 these are 4 business hours for P1, 8 business hours for P2, 1 business day for P3 and 5 business days for P4, measured in business hours and set out in your service agreement.
